If you have a current Social Security disability claim pending or would like to talk to someone at the Social Security Administration (SSA) about a potential claim, you’ll often be referred to SSA’s national toll-free number, 1-800-772-1213, or their website, www.ssa.gov. However, in many cases, it’s best to contact your local field office directly, especially if you already have a claim pending. Below is a list of all the local field offices in New Mexico and their contact information.
If you’re trying to reach a local office, you’ll need plenty of patience. Most local offices are understaffed, and it’s not uncommon to be placed on hold for up to an hour. Still, that patience often pays off, as you’re more likely to speak directly with the worker assigned to your file—someone who can provide more specific information than what you’ll get by calling the 800 number.
I strongly recommend verifying any information you receive from Social Security workers. They are human and can make mistakes. Many are also new to their positions and still learning the system. For example, I recently spoke with a potential disability client who was told by a local SSA worker to file for Social Security retirement first and apply for social security disability benefits later if he chose to. That advice was incorrect and could have affected his ability to file for disability benefits.
