Many people in our country suffer from chronic liver disease. It can be caused by alcoholism, heredity factors, autoimmune deficiencies, exposure to toxins, or Hepatitis C. - Sarcoidosis
- Liver failure
- Alcoholic liver disease
- Autoimmune hepatitis
- Hepatitis B and C
Two Ways to Qualify for SSDI Benefits
There are two ways an applicant who suffers from chronic liver disease can qualify for SSDI benefits. The first way is to meet the requirements in the SSA’s Blue Book Listing of Impairments. The criteria are stated in Chronic Liver Disease section 5.05 and include:
- Excess fluid in the abdomen
- Gastric or esophageal hemorrhaging
- Abnormally low levels of albumin, which is referred to as hypoalbuminemia
- Hepatic encephalopathy, which is confusion caused by the body’s inability to eliminate toxins in the body
- Liver disease
- Hepatitis
- Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis
If an individual does not meet the strict requirements stated in the SSA Blue Book, they may still qualify for disability benefits. They must show that they have a medically-documented medical condition that is disabling and prevents them from performing any work. The SSA will evaluate their residential functional capacity, which is the most demanding activities they can perform given their chronic liver disease, to determine if there is any type of job that they can perform.
