Traumatic Brain Injuries Caused by Car Accidents

A Traumatic Brain Injury Diagnosis After a Car WreckTraumatic brain injuries (TBIs) can have disastrous consequences, and more than half of them are caused by vehicle collisions. The risk of these injuries is growing, as evidenced by an increase of 53 percent in TBI-related emergency room visits between 2006 and 2014.

Types of Traumatic Brain Injuries

The most common types of traumatic brain injuries caused by vehicle accidents include:

  • Diffuse axonal injury. The skull doesn’t have to be penetrated or fractured in order for a traumatic brain injury to occur. The impact forces created by a vehicle collision can cause the brain to strike the internal hard bone of the skull, damaging brain structures and tearing nerve tissues. These injuries can disrupt the communication and chemical processes of the brain, leading to temporary or permanent brain damage, coma, or even death.
  • Concussion. A concussion may be caused by a victim’s head striking the dashboard, steering wheel, or door during a collision. Depending on the severity of an injury, concussions can lead to loss of consciousness, bleeding and swelling of the brain, or nerve damage.
  • Contusion. Generally the result of a direct impact to the head, a contusion is a bruise caused by bleeding on the brain. Contusions can be serious injuries if the bruised area is large, and they may lead to severe headaches, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. In the most severe cases, contusions may require surgical removal.
  • Penetrating injury. Also known as an open head wound, this injury occurs when glass and other objects penetrate the skull during a collision. Penetrating injuries can impair motor function and communication skills.
